IMPORTANT UPDATE (Fall 2022): As I learn more about the science of reading and writing, I have come to the conclusion that writing workshop does not typically include enough direct, explicit instruction. I am spending the next year researching this topic and will update my resources accordingly. Please know that this post was written before I came to this understanding.

How do you feel about teaching writing?

Apprehensive?

Nervous?

A little unqualified?

The good news is that you’re not alone. Many teachers don’t feel confident about teaching writing. Even better news is that you probably have hundreds of other writing teachers right in your home or classroom.

They’re called books – also known as mentor texts.

Today’s quick sneak peek video will show you how to use them!

Hi Kristie! This is Kate, Anna’s assistant. Unfortunately, as you can see from the comments above, some people have trouble downloading this document, and some don’t. Sometimes I have trouble, too! If my gmail address doesn’t receive a file instantly, I go back and enter my yahoo address. You can also try using Google Chrome, which works best with Anna’s site. I like Firefox, and I usually can download everything in one try, with the occasional need to try twice. I’m sorry we don’t have a 100% success rate on the first try, but please try again! Thanks!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have really looked forward to your new web site, and it didn’t disappoint me. For the past few years, I have relied on your site to deliver excellent, creative work for all ages and you have done it yet again. This is the first place I go to when I want to challenge my students and review what I have taught in class. I direct a learning lab and look for activities that require little prep but give big results, and your activities do just that. Keep on being creative, reasonable in cost, and informative! Oh yes, best of all, my children enjoy the activities!

Hi Kathy! I use a service called Leadpages, and it can be finicky. If it submits and stalls, it’s often because of an ad blocker. Do you have one on your computer that you can turn off and then try?
