It’s the perfect time of year for a nature scavenger hunt!
Have you been outside to enjoy the Fall weather? Where we live, the weather can turn cold (and stay cold) at any time. So when we had a rare 70 degree day in October, I thought we should make the most of it and pull out this nature scavenger hunt.
After we pick up the big kids from our church’s parochial school at 3:15, we have a lot to do before supper. There are snacks, homework, after school cleaning jobs, and piano practice for my oldest. Before I know it my husband is coming home to play with the kids while I get supper ready. It’s rare that I take the time to do this kind of activity with the kids.
We needed to take advantage of this beautiful weather, and I needed to haul my very pregnant self outside and get some fresh air.
So I cancelled after school cleaning and piano practice.
When the kids saw the nature hunts, all of them were excited to get started. (Okay, maybe they weren’t all excited, but no one was complaining. Except me, because my Three took so long to get his sandals on.)
They got right to work finding the easy things… like the tree, sun, and clouds – all things we could see from our front walk.
While my toddler grabbed at my legs so I would carry her, the four older kids raced toward the backyard and found a few things they knew they had seen before.
We headed to the “forest” behind our house, which is really a collection of trees that separates our neighborhood from the one behind it. Don’t you love how seriously the kids are taking the nature hunt?
My Eight and Five consulted about the plants they were finding. Despite our best efforts, there was no fern in sight! But we did discover some lovely lamb’s ear, which my Eight decided to take to school to share with her class.
This kept us busy for a good half an hour, and it was a fun way to spend time together. If you don’t live near a woods, you can find many of the objects on a walk around the neighborhood or just your own backyard.
We hope you get a chance to try our scavenger hunt!

Love this! Is there any way you can make something similar with pictures of supplies for a tornado kit (food, water, first aid kit, flashlights, etc) ?? I have 1-4 year olds in my daycare and something like this would be awesome!

I’m not entirely sure what you mean, Jennifer, but you’re welcome to send more details to my personal email, and I can add it to my list of possible projects. It’s anna(at)themeasuredmom(dot)com.
