Valentine’s Day spelling game
This game is very much like my winter spelling game. Here’s how to play:
You’ll need:
- the gameboard (I laminate mine for durability, but you wouldn’t have to)
- spelling word cards — with a spelling word printed on each card
- Valentine word cards
- playing pieces
- a die
- for VERSION TWO: a large pile of candy hearts or counters
Here’s how to play VERSION ONE:
1. Put your playing piece on Start. On your turn, the player to your left reads you a spelling word. If you spell it correctly, roll the die and move ahead. If not, stay where you are.
2. If you land on a plain heart, your turn is over.
3. If you land on a Valentine’s Day monster, the other player reads you a Valentine word. If you get it correct, move ahead the number of spaces on the card.
4. Whoever reaches Finish first, wins!
Here’s how to play VERSION TWO:
If you get it correct, collect candy hearts, buttons, or other counters according to the number on the card.
4. Keep moving around the board until one player wins by collecting 10 candy hearts or counters.
I put in four different levels of Valentine’s Day words. For younger players, you may want to remove the harder cards so as to prevent frustration. My daughter enjoys the challenge. She had learned chocolate at school, but February and bouquet had her stumped!
Here are some examples of the Valentine’s Day word cards. You can see how they get much harder depending on the point value.
