Printable Counting Mat
I created this printable counting mat for us to use during our Letter T week. You may have seen this dump truck in my Truck Pattern Card Pack.
The printable contains numbers up to 20, but I used just 1-5 with my Two. After a few months of math activities focused mainly on number recognition, he’s finally learned numbers 1-5. Yay! Counting items past three presents a little more of a challenge, but he’s getting better and better. He enjoyed this.
My Four had fun filling the truck with color tiles. He liked to choose the number before he filled the truck. At first he read this as “12.” We’re still working on recognizing numbers past 10. The counting isn’t a problem, though. After we did this a few times I put the color tiles on. Then he counted and chose the correct number to match.
Of course you could fill the truck with anything — here are just a few ideas if you’d like to tie it in to a letter study:
B – dried beans, blocks
C – cotton balls
F – feathers
L – letters
M – marshmallows
N – noodles
P – paper clips
R – rubber bands
T – toothpicks

I love this idea, off to print out a bunch. My son isn’t good at number recognition mainly because he isn’t particularly interested in it, but he loves trucks.
Thanks, I’m glad you stopped by! I have found that doing a variety of this kind of thing with my middle son is key to helping him learn… he wasn’t particularly interested in numbers, either!
I just found your site on Classroom Freebies. Your graphic for the truck looks amazing! You did a great job. I like how versatile the activity can be and that it works with so many different objects.
Thank you, Amy! I hope you can use it.
Great idea! I have a four year old nephew who would love this! Better yet…trains!

Awesome printable! My son would have loved this when he was little! I featured your printable as the Free Printable of the Day at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/LivingMontessoriNow and on Pinterest.
Wow, Deb, thanks so much – I’ve seen all the wonderful things at your site. I’m honored!
I love this! It’s definitely going on our list to use soon. Thanks for sharing such a great printable.
Thank you, Becky Marie! I need to remember it pull it back out again for my two year old.
Your blog is awesome! I teach Pre-K and I have LOVED everything I’ve come across so far! Thank you!
I’m glad you found me, Lindsay! I’d love for you to share it with other preschool teachers you know — that’s a demographic I’m not sure how to reach, beyond Pinterest. If you know of any linky parties for preschool teachers where I could share some of my ideas, I’d love to hear about them!
Dear Anna’
Thanks a lot for the lovely and awesome ideas.
You’re so welcome – thanks for stopping by!
The fill up truck is a wonderful idea. This a great idea from just using legos and cubes to make a tower or a boat. This takes legos to a different place math, more less. Thank You. I love it
Thank you for checking it out, Sheila!
Thanks for linking this fabulous idea to Tuesday Tots. I have featured it this week 🙂
Thank you so much!! These are adorable and I am already thinking of all the wonderful things to do with them!!
Absolutely love your ideas!! The truck printables are perfect for my upcoming transportation unit!! Thanks a ton!! The kids will love this.
I’m so glad you can use them, Julie! I have lots of transportation printables on my site – so be sure to check out my letter T page (under Alphabet – under Teaching Resources in the menu bar). I also have some simple transportation emergent readers (Under Teaching Reading – under Teaching Resources in the menu bar). Thanks so much for commenting!
Hi Anna,
I have just downloaded and printed your Dump truck Counting Mat. The dump truck printed out perfectly, but the numbers came up as squares with the letter “f” inside?. I can write out my own numbers, but just thought I’d let you know. Thank you for all the wonderful freebies you share here 🙂
Take care,
Georgia
Thanks so much for letting me know, Georgia. That’s strange because it printed just fine for me. Can you tell me what browser you’re using? I used Google Chrome. Sometimes Internet Explorer doesn’t play nicely with my website.
Hi Anna,
Just printed something off another website and it did the same thing to the writing part of the pdf :(. So definitely not on your side! Must be something I am using. I use Firefox as a browser. Thanks for the reply – I do appreciate it!
Georgia
Bummer. 🙁 Hope you get it figured out soon!
Amazing! You are so kind for sharing your resources.
Thank you!
BTW I followed you on Pinterst
Thanks so much for your kind comment – hope you find lots more you can use here! 🙂
I love this printable and activity, Anna! I featured your post and photo in my Montessori-Inspired Construction Unit post today. 🙂
Thank you so much, Deb!
Thank you very much for this printable! I know my son will enjoy this a lot.
You’re very welcome, Michelle!
Hello! I have been searching and searching your site for the dump truck counting printable- but it isn’t in the truck pattern pack that is shown on this page. Is there another link for this particular printable along with the number cards? I would love to use this in my classroom!
Thank you!
I’m not sure what you mean… did you click on the word HERE at the end of the post? (“Get your free printable HERE”)
Dear Anna,
Thank you so much for sharing your resources with us, it is big help really, thank you again.
Wish you all the best. 🙂
You’re very welcome, Amani!
Thank you for all your fun activities! Which blocks did you use for your Dump Truck Counting Mat? They look like they are the perfect size.
In the main image, I used Duplos (affiliate link) https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Creative-Preschool-Pre-Kindergarten-Building/dp/B00J4S41AY/ref=sm_n_ma_dka_US_pr_pub_0_2?sigts=1494713271446&sig=2904b251fe624d57f35ad2f461811424915da309&adId=B00J4S41AY&creativeASIN=B00J4S41AY&linkId=63e5b8f62ab0011ab4a5610a6982ff26&tag=themeamom0e-20&linkCode=w43&ref-refURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.themeasuredmom.com%2Fprintable-counting-mat-fill-the-dump-truck%2F&slotNum=0&imprToken=YTCUxGUWEBVjsA08sObS7g

Thank you so much, Mona!
I have been a loyal follower to your page due to all the great ideas that you shared with us!! However, when I tried to print the Dump Truck for my kiddos by clicking the “Click here for your free printables” nothing happens 🙁
