It was so refreshing to listen to a kindergarten teacher talk about incorporating a structured literary approach to reading and what a day looked like in kindergarten. When she is working in groups for 15 minutes each–what are the rest of her students doing at this time? It is difficult running groups in my classroom if I don’t have extra adult hands. Thanks for your input.

Hi Marion! So glad you found the episode valuable. I teach in Ontario and we have a play-based kindergarten program, as well as a two-person team (teacher and Early Childhood Educator) which definitely provides advantages when it comes to taking groups! Typically the rest of the class is engaged in open play or in the gym/lesson with my ECE partner when I pull kids for short periods of time, and I seize those moments when I can! If I were the only adult and didn’t have that option of “play” I would be ensuring that the rest of the class is involved in something that doesn’t need me – but is still worth their time – like a drawing/writing prompt, fine motor stations, straightforward math centres, etc. Also I love the line “think of small groups as an instructional strategy, not a time of the day” – right now I only have one student needing extra literacy support, and he’s the only one I take on a daily basis, so it really doesn’t take a lot of time out of the day. Hope that helps!
