The Big 5 (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) get a lot of attention – but what about oral language? Joan Kelley
I’m a former teacher, spent >10 yrs in literacy lab at Harvard GSE, and left to figure out how to create family partnerships that impact reading outcomes. I am personally DONE with waiting for schools, at scale, to ensure that all children learn how to read well, but right now there’s a huge disconnect and it’s like encouraging nicotine patches in 1950: families are unaware there’s a problem so don’t step up to fix it. According to Learning Heroes, ~90% of families believe their children read at or above grade level, and yet what we all know is that ~34% of fourth graders are Proficient (NAEP). High-quality podcasts like yours, with broad audiences of families with growing awareness, could make a huge difference.
I’d love to be a guest on your podcast to talk about how schools can and should be creating family partnerships that are based on transparency and an understanding that schools and families HAVE to collaborate to help all children reach their potential.
Full disclosure: I haven’t made money in 3 yrs but I am selling the app for $19.99/yr to families and/or $500/yr for access for all families and staff. I am 61 yrs old and committed to this mission I’m on, to make sure no family learns too late that a child is struggling and that every family has doable and realistic ways to support at home and has agency enough to partner with schools. Small studies show that this structured way of helping schools partners can make a real difference.
