Today I’m sharing set four of my free phonics readers. This set features short e words.

My preschooler is really starting to catch on to short vowel words by reading my phonics readers. I pull out the box of short a, short i, and short o books and he reads about 5-6 in one sitting. They’re quick and colorful – but best of all, they’re readable.
Most of the phonics readers I’ve found are just too tough for kids who are just starting to sound out words. It’s no fun to learn to read when you have to stop and sound out each and every word. Talk about exhausting! That’s why I created my own beginning phonics readers.
Each book starts with a chance to identify the word family and read the first word.
When your child turns the page, he’ll see if he read the word correctly. You see that the word, bell, is in a short sentence with sight words.
While the books don’t tell actual stories, they do give your child practice reading phonetic words in real sentences that make sense. These books build both skills and confidence. Win-win!
“Little” is a new sight word for this set.
This page has several words your child should be able to sound out after reading previous sets. “Man” and “hot dog” are not sight words, but they are easy to sound out.
I always leave words with beginning blends for the end of the books, because they’re quite tough. If your child can’t quite get the “sm” to say its sound, that’s not too surprising. Just keep emphasizing that s and m come together as /sm/. Add that blend to the word ending (“ell”) and you get the word smell.
Again, this page has sight words (it, is, a) and a word from a previous set (bad). The final page gives your child practice reading all the words again.
How to assemble:
- Print pages 2-29 front to back (page 1 is my Terms of Use). I like to use light cardstock to make the books durable.
- Separate the stack into each individual book. Each book consists of two pages front to back.
- Cut across the horizontal center of the pages.
- Insert the pages into each other, using the page numbers as a guide.
- Staple with a long arm stapler.

You’re welcome, Nancy!

These are cute. I found them looking up phonics books for jet because my 4 year old specifically requested an airplane. However, he very decidedly told me that the picture was not a jet because it has propellers 🙂 Also, I’m wondering why you put the word little in the book.
Anna G
He’ll have to tell the clip art artists that the image is wrong. 🙂 I’m at their mercy! I don’t remember why I put “little” in the book. I’m currently working at completely revising these readers and will look at that when I work on this book. However, the free versions will remain as they are.
Billie McClure
I used these readers with 3 struggling 1st graders. Built their confidence so much! Now I am making sets to send to schools in Uganda. Thank you!

You’re very welcome, Billie!

Thanks your books are fantastic.

Thank you so much, Cecilia! I hope you find many things here you can use!
Erica
Thank you so much for all of the readers you have provided. I have used many of them with my daughter and she loves them. I just wanted to let you know that for the eck reader from set 4 the word check on page ten gets cropped. The c falls right in the center fold. Thanks again!
Anna Geiger
So glad you can use these, Erica, and thanks for the edit! I just fixed it.
Katrine
Thank you for such wonderful readers, they help my students start to read and really like this process! Just only I like to use them like flashcards with the word on one side and the picture with text on the other. Thank you!
Anna Geiger
I’m so glad to hear your students are enjoying them, Katrine!

Deserie Tommaro
Hello,
I have been trying to download a short E reader book. I have added my name and email twice now and it still prompts me to do it again.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks, Deserie
Kate Dowling
Hi Deserie!
This is Kate, Anna’s assistant. I’m not sure if you’re clicking the correct box; it can be a little confusing. Please be sure to click the one that says, “CLICK TO DOWNLOAD.” There are a few other options under the post that are for other offers. Once you enter your name and email address, go right to your inbox and look for a new email from Anna. You should then see a box to click, and the books will show up on your screen. Please give it another try, and let us know if you still have trouble!
