For letter R, we made rainbow-colored oats! Making six colors of oats was actually pretty simple, and of course my toddler (pictured) and preschooler wanted to be a part of it.  We followed a tutorial using old-fashioned oats, water, and food coloring ... Short u phonics books

Today I'm sharing a set of fun and free easy readers featuring the short u sound. (This post contains affiliate links.) A sample book Every book starts like this.  I always put the first new word in big bold print without a picture.  Since the focus of these early readers is sounding out words, I don't give a picture clue on that first page. Now your child can check how he did by reading the word in a simple ... Read More

Learning to write letter U

Read on for a variety of ways to make letter U! I printed a giant U and some block arrows.  Then we put them on the U, saying, "uh, uh, UP." We made the letter out of unifix cubes. I've found that millet makes a really good writing surface! So I poured some on a baking sheet, and my Four wrote with a chopstick.  It's so fun to shake the tray and write again and again. My Letters of All Sizes are ... Read More

Letter U crafts

Cupcake Liner Umbrellas Family Crafts gave us the inspiration for this fun umbrella craft. We decided to use blue puffy paint for the raindrops, which was a little tricky. You might be surprised that my Two did the neater project on the left; my Four did the one on the right. But that's because I was holding my Two's hand while he squeezed the puffy paint, and my Four did it all on his own. So be forewarned. You ... Read More
