Write the room activity for short u words

Many of you have been asking for my final short vowel “write the room” printable. Here (at long last!) is the set for short u words.

Just in case you’re new to “write the room,” here’s how it works.

  • Print small cards with the featured words and post them around your classroom or home.
  • Give your learner(s) a recording sheet to record each word as it is found.

Pretty simple! But there are so many possibilities. I love “write the room” because it’s so easy to differentiate for a variety of learners.

As you can see, I have my son do a more advanced version of this activity. He has to find each word, unscramble it, and write it next to the matching picture on his board.

Truthfully, his reading has picked up lately and this is much too easy for him. (He can spell the words without needing to see the letters on each card.) But I’ll be adding some more difficult write the room activities soon, in the hopes of challenging him and giving you more activities for your toolbox!

In the download, you will find three levels:

Level 1 – Simply find the matching picture and copy the word in the space on the recording sheet.

Level 2 – Find the word (without a picture cue) and write it next to the corresponding picture on the recording sheet.

Level 3 – Find the matching picture, unscramble the word, and write it next to the picture on the recording sheet.

Hi Jessica! I currently just have the short vowel write the room sets (see the links at the bottom of the post). I hope to create more, but I’m working on other projects at the moment. 🙂
