To kick off this month, I’m hosting a giveaway for the fantastic book, 7 Mighty Moves, by Lindsay Kemeny.

This is a wonderful book by a classroom teacher who made the switch from balanced to structured literacy after everything she knew didn’t help her severely dyslexic son learn to read.

The good news is that now he’s thriving – thanks to what she learned and implemented.

In the book, Lindsay shares 7 important moves she made as she transitioned to a more effective way of teaching.

The book is beautiful, inspiring, and informative – I can’t recommend it enough!

Please note: This giveaway is for U.S. residents only.

This sounds like such a great book that I would love to read and share with others in my school who are on the fence or still hanging on to practices that are not beneficial for students.

My son is an undiagnosed dyslexic (I diagnosed him since 3 schools in 3 states said he didn’t have it). As a literacy specialist in an elementary school, I would love to have this book to help me learn what has helped for others and what I can teach to our staff to inform them on practices that work and don’t work. This book has been on my wish list since it came out. This book would not only impact me, but my entire staff of teachers and our students.

I’m always looking for great resources and ideas to supplement my classroom instruction! This book seems like a great tool. My first year of teaching Kindergarten I followed the balanced literacy model of the big box curriculum my district provided. It worked, for a while, until my students actually had to use the information we spent all year learning and they couldn’t! I knew instantly, after that first year, I had to make a change. Slowly I’ve walked away completely from balanced literacy and my students are truly stronger for it.

As a reading interventionist, I am always looking for answers for those kiddos who just don’t seem to respond to the classroom and intervention strategies we are using. It is heartbreaking to watch them go from being happy and excited to come to reading groups to becoming disillusioned and convinced that they “just can’t read.” We are making progress using the SOR methods, but we won’t be happy until all our kids become fluent readers.

I am a 1st grade teacher who works on reversals (numbers, letters, and words) with many students in my classroom. Not having a dyslexia specialist in our district nor our area (we are a rural school) it is up to classroom teachers to either help correct or support our students with dyslexia (until it has effected their progress to an intensity to qualify under SPED) or dyslexia tendencies. I would LOVE to have a resource to share with my team that could support or change our teaching!

Thank you for sharing this book with us! As 1 in a family of 5 children, all of whom have at least one form of dyslexia; I know how important it is to have teachers who understand it and other things that cause reading problems in children. I was the lucky one and my dyslexia was diagnosed when I was in my 40’s and just deals with spelling, thank goodness for spell check. I have 2 daughters, the oldest has several forms of dyslexia; has ADHD and then due to a concussion when she was 5, a TBI resulting in fluency problems. I think my youngest daughter summed it up best when she was in kindergarten “it’s not fair that school is so easy for me and so hard for R” I am going to be a tutor with Title 1 students and will most likely run across a child like my daughter and would like to have as many “tools” in my toolbox of ideas to help all children.
