Teaching Letter Ii

Are you looking for letter Ii activities to use with your preschooler or kindergartner? Maybe you’re a classroom teacher browsing for more ideas.

Research tells us that a direct, explicit approach to teaching the alphabet is more effective than indirect teaching. Enjoy the crafts, art ideas, and book list, but know that using a scripted routine like the one below is the most efficient way to teach letters and sounds. Make it your own!

How to introduce letter Ii

  • Say words that begin with Ii: Say each word after me. (Emphasize the /ĭ/ at the beginning of each word as you say it.) Itch. Ill. In. Igloo. Insect. India. What sound do you hear at the beginning of each word? The sound is /ĭ/.
  • Talk about what your mouth is doing as you say the sound: Look at what my mouth is doing as I say /ĭ/. Now you try. Put your finger between your teeth as you say the sound. Is your mouth open a lot or a little? (A little) Put your hand on your throat as you say /ĭ/. Is it a quiet or noisy sound? (noisy)
  • Introduce the letter on a flash card: (Hold up the letter I card in uppercase or lowercase.) This is the letter I. When we see this card, we say “I spells /ĭ/.” Your turn. (Students: “I spells /ĭ/.”)

How to practice writing uppercase letter I

  • Sky-write the letter: To make the letter I, we start at the top. We pull down and go across the top and across the bottom. Watch me put my hand in the air and write an I in the sky. I start at the top. I pull down and go across the top and across the bottom. Now you try. Put your finger up in the air. Start at the top. Pull down and go across the top and across the bottom.
  • Have students finger-write the letter: Make an I by moving your finger on the table. Start at the top. Pull down and go across the top and across the bottom. (Other options: sand or salt tray, shaving cream, etc.) Now do the same thing while saying “I spells /ĭ/.” Remember to underline the I when you say /ĭ/. (Practice multiple times.)

How to practice writing lowercase letter i

  • Sky-write the letter: To make the letter i, we start in the middle, pull down, and give it a dot. Watch me put my hand in the air and write an i in the sky. I start in the middle, pull down, and give it a dot. Now you try. Put your finger up in the air. Start in the middle, pull down, and give it a dot.

Hello, Georgina! I’m so glad you can use these activities and hope you’ll have a chance to try some with your own kids too, if they’re the right age. I know it’s hard to balance everything even as a stay at home mom. You have my deepest respect as both a teacher and parent!
